Q&A: Charlee Dyroff

Charlee Dyroff has an MFA from Columbia University, and is the author of the debut novel Loneliness & Company. Her work has appeared in SlateGulf CoastLapham’s QuarterlyGuernicaPloughsharesEater, and The Best American Food Writing of 2019. She lives in New York.

Best piece of writing advice?

“Build a home for your writing.” I think this can mean many things to different people, but to me it means making a life where there is room to write–protecting the space, time, energy needed to do so.

How have you found the Colorado writing community?

I left Colorado to go to college on the East Coast and didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until much later, so I’m just meeting and connecting with Colorado creatives for the first time. It’s been so much fun–almost like discovering a new world inside of a familiar one–and I hope I continue to get to know more of the community.

What’s the greatest part of coming back to Colorado?

Family and friends! Nature! Fresh air!

What are you currently reading?

I’m reading River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure. It’s written from two distinct perspectives, and it’s really pulling me in!

What will you be reading at the event and what is meaningful about this selection?

I’ll be reading a section from my first book, Loneliness & Company. It just came out, and I’m still in this dreamy-surreal-letting-go state as the story that’s been in my head for years finds its own footing in the real world. I’ve only read out loud from it once or twice now, so it’ll be meaningful to do so at Reading Den with new and old friends.
